What exactly don't you understand?
The whole meaning – in the first quote I get it – (because the
archeologist is interested in antique things and the older they are, the more
interested he is, so the same goes for his potential wife) but here I simply
can't figure it out.

PRICE is a value of something expressed in money etc, VALUE is how much it
really means for someone no matter what the price is.
Still don't get that 
(and having that sinking feeling I misunderstand the difference above )

Oh, come on! Imagine our ex-president or a similar guy speaking. The point
is, a cynic is able to tell you, how much this or that costs but can't see how
important even “cheap” things can be for a certain person.
