I heard the bells on Christmas day ^*1
Their old familiar carols play, ^*2
And wild and sweet the words repeat ^*3
Of peace on earth, good will to men.  ^*4

I thought how, as the day had come, ^*5
The belfries of all Christendom ^*6
Had rolled along the unbroken song ^*7
Of peace on earth, good will to men.  ^*8

And in despair I bowed my head ^*9
“There is no peace on earth,” I said, ^*10
“For hate is strong and mocks the song ^*11
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”  ^*12

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: ^*13
“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; ^*14
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail ^*15
With peace on earth, good will to men.”  ^*16

Till ringing, singing on its way ^*17
The world revolved from night to day, ^*18
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime ^*19
Of peace on earth, good will to men.  ^*20
