Pete Droge1. Could you in several words describe what kind of person you are?

In a constant state of flux.

2. Have you always wanted to be a musician/songwriter? When did you discover your talent?

Yes, I have always wanted to be a musician... I started making up songs on the ukulele when I was four years old, so for as long as I can remember really, I've been drawn to music.

3. What was the first music you listened to as a child? Do you remember the first CD you had?

My parents played great music around our home... early Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel, Dylan... James Taylor, Waylon and Willie, Fleetwood Mac. All of this stuff made a big impression on my musical mind. Later I discovered more rock stuff on my own... Black Sabbath, the Stooges, AC/DC, Zeppelin. I am old enough that there were no CDs when I started buying music. It was vinyl... The first record I bought with my own money was Kiss Alive.

4. Which one of your songs do you like best and why is it your favorite?

The songs of mine that have held up the best are the ones that are very rooted in the truth but at the same time are open... more universal in their construction. There are a couple of songs that come to mind, "Under The Waves" and "Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows"... these are songs that are fixed to their core, but have grown with time... They have the ability to reveal themselves in new ways and that can be very powerful.

5. What do you consider to be your greatest success as a musician/songwriter?

I don't know... success is too much of a moving target. I try not to be fixed on any external idea of what it means. The deepest satisfaction I get from music has nothing to do with the outside validation that most would consider the framework of so called success. Like Lao Tzu said, "success is as dangerous as failure."

6. You write music for film and TV. How does that differ from the "regular" songwriting process?

At it's best it comes from the same place... somewhere above thought. Obviously, it's more collaborative. I really thrive on that. I like to be in union with other creative people. I like to feel like I can take my skills and blend them with the vision of a director and help them get what they are after.

7. Our readers are familiar with your song UNDER THE WAVES. Could you give us a little background to the song? What inspired you, what is it really about? What inspired you?

My partner, Elaine Summers and I wrote that song after reading a script a few years ago. At first it was written for the central character, but later I realized it was much more broad than that. It turned out that it was a much more of a personal song than I knew at the time. Again, this is what I love about songs, they change and grow with time and they can mean something different one day to the next.

8. Are you currently working on new songs and new projects?

Currently I'm writing a lot. Some will find it's way onto my next record with the Droge and Summers blend. And some will likely be included in a documentary film that I am scoring called 'A Lot Like You.'

9. What do you do when you're not writing/recording/performing music?

I like working outside... tending to trails in the woods and walking.

10. This interview will be read mostly by Czech students of English. Is there something that you would like to tell them?

The best communication comes from the heart. Broken language attached to a genuine heartfelt truth will trump eloquent bullshit every time.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and your music with us! We hope to hear more from you here in the Czech Republic!
