Frázové slovesá v IELTS písomnej časti

Does someone know if the phrasal verbs can be used in the formal writting part of IELTS/FCE… ?

I used to think that it would be an unappropriate usage of them. However, recently I have seen a tutorial viedeo on how to write an IELTS essay successfully and the author has used the epxression : … to bring about the improvements … (= zaviesť zlepšenia …)

I thought it was not acceptable.

There's nothing unacceptable about „bring about improvements“ in any style or register or context.

It's impossible to give general advice on using or not using phrasal verbs. Some are informal, some very formal. A good dictionary will always give you detailed information about each phrasal verb.

There is nothing special for bring about.

Harp on is informal:

Set forth is literary:

etc. 🙂

Thank you, I have always thought, phrasal verbs are just for unformal speach or writing and in written formal form, they have to be replaced by formal alternatives – very often, with those of French origin. For example : SHOW UP would be inappropriate, the right choice can be ARRIVE, and so on. It is nice to know, there are different group of phrasal verbs and some of them can I use in IELTS test.

Thank Dan for your opnion. I found the expression to bring about improvements for something whose using would be punished. Instead, I am expected to use something like IMPLEMENT.
