Title: As good as it gets Director: James L. Brook Genre: romantic comedy, drama Characters: Mr. Udall = Melvin (Jack Nicholson) – old man, lives alone, hates world and everybody hate him , he has many irritating rituals Carol Connelly (Helm Hunt) – waitress, clever and beautiful woman, has a sick child Simon Biskop (Greg Kinear) –homosexual lonely painter dog Verdell –Simon´s dog There are no common features between Melvin and Simon at first sight. But, as we get deep into the story, we can see how similar they are. They are both artist – Melvin is writer and Simon is painter. They also live alone in the same building on the same floor in the apartments opposite the hallway. Simon has a dog Verdell, which Melvin used to hate. But when Melvin had to take care of Verdell, his behavior changed, because he realized, that he need a company. Verdell is a clever dog, which love Simon and after few moments, he also love Melvin. He refused to go to Simon, after he got back from hospital because he has a very strong friendship with Melvin now. Simon has many problems. He´s lonely and he was almost killed while robbery. He lost his apartment and ability to paint after this. He is also a gay and his father don´t like him because of his sexuality. Turning point in his behavior is when he find his ability to paint again after Carol let him paint her naked. Carol´s mum has important role in this story, because she supports Carol and he take care of Carol´s sick son. Melvin and Carol knew each other from restaurant. Carol didn´t like him, because he was very rude, but she changed her mind because of everything he did for her (he payed medical care for his son). But after all, she still don´t understand his strange behavior. Simon and Melvin hated each other, but after Melvin helped Simon, they became good friends. The main idea of the film is, that every person can change his behavior and life if he want and be nice to others. I like this movie, because there is a good story and plot with good characters. Actor´s performances are outstanding, and I´m not the only one, who has the same opinion, because Jack Nicholson received an Oscar for this movie. My favorite scene was when Verdell peed at the hallway and Melvin threw him to garbage pite.
