“fried egg on their hats is an old term used for the top-ranking officers. It refers to the gold braiding decorating their caps and some parts of their uniforms – mainly the Royal Navy, although other armed forces have their share of "fried egg”.

At midnight on 5 July we went to start work and saw a lot of men with scrambled egg on their hats (our word for the braid worn by the higher ranks) and I thought ‘Oh, my God it’s on’ as we all knew D Day was imminent.
