the next/the following

Zdravím 🙂

  • He said he hoped the next Friday's lesson would go better.
  • He said he hoped the following Friday's lesson would go better.

Prosím, je zde možné použít obojí? Za mě je v pořádku i první verze s „the next“.

Podobně zde:

  • We arrived in New York two months ago on a Wednesday, but the airline lost our luggage and it didn't arrive until the coming Monday.

Bylo by u této věty chybou nezměnit coming na following?

Děkuji.

Yes, it would be a mistake not to change „coming“ to „following“. The coming Monday is meaningless: it would have to be this coming Monday and could only refer to the Monday that comes in the future after the moment of speaking.

Your doubts about „the next/the following“ are addressed in the Word Reference forum here.

Problémem je, že ve stejném vlákně najdeme akceptované věty:

  • It was already Wednesday and my guests were due on the coming/following Monday.
  • We arrived in New York two months ago on a Wednesday, but the airline had lost our luggage; they said it had been accidentally rerouted to Timbuktu but promised us that we would have it by the coming Monday.
  • … and the young people were on their way home to think and dream of who should touch the tape first on** the coming Monday**. (Owen Tilley, The Rambler’s Jottings, 1886)
  • Both of these galas were scheduled for the coming Saturday. (Susan Orlean, Saturday Night, 2011, first published 1991)
  • The coming Monday was a school holiday. (Kathryn Casey, Deliver Us — Three Decades of Murder and Redemption in the Infamous I-45/Texas Killing Fields, 2015)
  • Once it had finished, she suggested they chance a bit of shopping in Castle Street on the coming Saturday. (Lizzie Lane, The Tobacco Girls, 2024)

Podobně zde:

  • Fearing turmoil again, I suggested that this be done at the next Friday's meeting. (Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library)
  • At the next Monday's meeting the rape statistics were again pretty high. After he read them, Dianne interrupted to say, “Is that those working girls…" (San Francisco Sheriff's Department History)
