Dobrý den,
je nějaký výnamový rozdíl v používí minulého času modálního slovasa CAN, tedy COULD resp. jeho opisu WAS ABLE TO:
Zajíma mě to v souvislosti s použítím v této větě, kde údajně nemůže být použito COULD (proč ne COULD?):
Just one thing WAS ABLE TO (NE COULD) drain that colour from my face for a brief moment earlier this morning — and that was my holiday credit card bill.
Ve článku na HFE o Modálních slovesech jsem se nic konkrétního nedozvěděl, resp. alespoň ne to, jaký je rozdíl v použítí COULD (mohl) a WAS ABLE TO (byl schopen).
Taky je celý kontext:
I have been back from holiday two weeks, during which time my major concern has
been my beautiful tan. All this time I have been avoiding the bath and dressing
only in disco white. Just one thing was able to drain that colour from my face
for a brief moment earlier this morning — and that was my holiday credit
card bill.
