Napadlo mě “The student was given 5 from/of/in chemistry”.

Není možné použít “was given”?

We don't use this 1 – 5 grading system in English-speaking cultures, so if your intended audience isn't familiar with the Czech grading system, they won't understand it. In Russia, for example, the grading system works the other way round: a “pětka” (пятёрка) is the top mark.

If your audience is unfamiliar with the Czech system:

  • the student got // was given the worst // lowest possible mark (- a five) in chemistry. “For” (instead of “in”) is also acceptable:

Erin got top marks for English, maths, French, physics and admin and was full of praise for the school.

(“In” is also ok in the example above.)

When the mark is for something that isn't a study discipline (e.g. chování) you'd say “for” (not “in”):

  • He got a 1 (, the top mark,) for / in (school) behaviour. (AmE behavior).
