rozdíl mezi tím asi je: viz následující věta z knihy o dopingu (Dying to win)

chtěl bych být fair play = lofty ideal
jsem vždy fair play = accepted practice

It's sad to think that fair play has become a lofty ideal rather than
accepted practice. It makes me so mad when I hear about athletes who've
resorted to doping themselves with steroids just to get that bit of extra
advantage… It really is an insult to those who work hard to get to be as good
as they are.

I agree. James Naismith must told about other lofty ideals, I believe he couldn´t even imagine not to be fair play.
