HE or SHE = THEY ?

V druhé části věta je použito … THEY might know …
proto, že se neví (resp. není řečeno) jestli to je HE or SHE??? Díky za utvrzení.

I would urge anyone who thinks they might know anything about them to come forward.

Everyone has their own problems…

EACH STUDENT BROUGHT A BOOK WITH THEM apod.

Je vhodné v tomto případě použít they? Např. Your customer must know what they want. Could you please check with them some details?etc. Předem děkuji za odpověď.

Ano, je to přesně tak, jak píšete. Viz:

Lze použít spojení he or she, ale daleko častěji se používá zájmeno THEY (i když se jedná o jednotné číslo), nebo přivlastňovací THEIR.

  • The person had something in their hand.
  • Every parent wants to watch their child succeed, don't they?
  • Each customer must feel they received a quality product at a fair price.
  • Somebody took it, didn't they? – zájmeno SOMEBODY je také neurčité (HFE)

Viz také: If anyone cares to join me, (they are /he is?) most welcome (stackexchange):

They/them/their can be used after a person, anybody, anyone, somebody, nobody, whoever, each and every. “They” has a plural verb in this case.

  • A) If anybody calls, take their name and ask them to call again later.
  • B) Nobody was late, were they?

This singular use of they/them/their is convenient when the person referred to could be either male or female. So it's better to say:

  • If anyone cares to join me in this campaign, either now or in future, they are most welcome.

Další příklady:

  • Your customer must know what they want.
  • Anyone who wants to travel on this international service must have their passport with them.
  • Oh look! Someone's [= someone has] left their umbrella on the train.
… so that no-one knew when it was / would be their turn.
  • It's important that everyone in the team knows what their responsibilities are.
