Question Time with Patrick Park
Při čtení rozhovoru si k poslechu můžete pustit píseň SOMETHING PRETTY:
Could you in several words describe what kind of person you are?
It's hard to say what kind of person I am, it changes all the time.
Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you discover your talent?
I've been playing the guitar since I was 8 years old. I started writing songs when I was probably 10 or so. It was just something that I was always doing, and I've always arranged my life so that I could spend time doing it.
What was the first music you listened to as a child? Do you remember the first CD you had?
The first music that I ever remember listening to was stuff that my dad would play around the house. Stuff like Sonny Terry and Brownie Maggie, Leadbelly, and Mississippi John Hurt. He was really into old folk songs. The first music that I bought myself was the Beastie Boys first record, which my parents made me throw away as soon as they heard it, but my friend taped it for me.
Which one of your songs do you like best and why is it your favorite?
It's really hard for me to pick one of my songs as a favorite. Usually my favorite song is whichever one I just finished writing.
Is there any song in your ‘catalog’ that you grew to hate? Why is that?
My answer to this is pretty much the same as to the question above. Usually the song that I hate the most is the one I'm working on, because that's the time that it's the most raw and ugly.
What do you do when you're not writing / recording / performing music?
I'm working on a song in some form or another every day. When I'm not, I'm just trying to figure out what this is all about.
Many people all over the world know your music through a popular TV show called “The O.C.” – How do you feel about the show?
I haven't had a TV in about 10 years, so I've never actually seen the show, but a lot of people have come to know my songs through that show so I am grateful about it.
Is it possible to somehow summarize what your songs are about?
They're all about different things. If you ask me about a specific one I could say more about it.
Ok, our readers are for example familiar with the song ‘SOMETHING PRETTY’. Could you tell us something about this song? What is it really about? What inspired you?
Something Pretty is about me sort of finding myself a little bit. I think most of the time people, (myself included) go around with an idea about who they are, and all these little story lines that go along with those ideas to support them. These ideas can be pretty far from the truth. This song is about me seeing myself closer to the way that I actually was in action. Which is not always such an easy thing to accept.
Are you currently working on new songs or projects?
I'm currently about three fourths finished working on my next record.
What message would you give to our readers, students of English, over here in the Czech Republic?
That the best way to be happy that I've found, is to pay attention to what I'm doing.
Thanks a lot for your time, Patrick, and good luck with your new record.
