Dakujem

I saw IronMan last night, I had never seen it before.

I saw the film because my friend had recommened it to me.

I watched it because she had said it was good.

  • defakto je to reported speech, že? takže by to mělo být she had said it had been good (to zní zvláštně).
  • na druhou stranu je to něco, co je nejspíš stále pravda… tak is? nebo jen was?

moc děkuji

Dobrý den, prosím o vysvětlení užití předminulého a minulého času ve větě přímo z učebnice:
He (inventor) hadn't slept for six nights, because he was putting the final touches to his great discovery. Proč v hlavní větě není také minulý čas, když to spolu očividně souvisí? Nespal 6 nocí, protože finalizoval se svým vynálezem…?
Odstavec pokračuje větou: He was nearly ready to share it with the world.

I haven't slept for six nights, because I am putting the final touches to my great discovery.

  1. I believe I did more than what you asked (had asked) of me.
  2. You were speaking to a homicide detecive who flew (had flown) 2000 miles to investigate a double murder for which you are clearly the prime suspect.

I agree with the native speakers – surprise, surprise! The past perfect is not “wrong” here, but native speakers (with a sound command of English) wouldn't use it. It's not called for. There's no understood “cause and effect” between the verbs (“did/asked”, “speaking/flew”). They're two actions that happened in the past, but the earlier action doesn't have any causative or resultative influence on the later one. We don't need to understand (in the given context) that one action happened earlier than the other for the sentence to make sense.

I didn't do more because you asked me or as a result of you asking me. I could have done more whether or not you asked me. There's no … a tudíž… connection between the two actions.

You weren't speaking to the detective because he flew or as a result of him flying. You could have spoken to the detective whether or not he had flown 2,000 miles. There's no … a tudíž … connection between the two actions.

Contrast:

  • Jim had broken his leg and had to cancel his holiday. (Breaking his leg was the reason for him cancelling.) … a tudíž …
  • Jill had lost her keys and couldn't get into her car. (Losing her keys was the reason she couldn't get into her car.) … a tudíž …
  • Honza had drunk too many beers and wasn't fit to drive. (Drinking too many beers was the reason he wasn't fit to drive.) … a tudíž...
  • The dog hadn't been taken for a walk and peed on the carpet. (Not being taken for a walk was the reason it peed on the carpet.) … a tudíž …

Dobrý den,

bohužel jsem se ztratila u předložky before.

My parents returned before I had cleaned the apartment.

She was dead before the doctor had arrived. – příjezd doktora už tedy byl zbytečný

The case was dismissed before the police had finished their investigation. – policie vyšetřování ani nedokončila

He was hit from behind before he had managed to turn around. – k otočení už ani nedošlo

konkrétně tyto věty. Je špatné použít předpřítomný čas takto? -

My parents had returned before I cleaned the apartment. (přijeli ještě před tím, než jsem stihla uklidit)

She had been dead before the doctor arrived. (už byla mrtvá, než doktor přijel)

Tha case had been dismissed before the police finished their investigation.

He had been hitted from behing before he managed to turn around.

Moc a moc děkuji

V těch větách, kde jste to napsala obráceně, to právě má význam trochu jiný.

Není to žádný zásadní rozdíl, spíše změna perspektivy.

Up to now, she had never been to the USA. nebo je lepší Up to now, she has never been to the USA ? Díky moc

(Normal usage:) Up to now, she has never been to the USA.

(Normal usage:) Up to now, she had never been to the USA.

V Oxford slovníku pod heslom dumps je príkladová veta :

„He’d been down in the dumps since his girlfriend left him.“

Nemal by tam by PRESENT PERFECT ??? Veď PAST PERFECT tam nedáva zmysel. Alebo ak áno, potom prosím, čo tá vera znamená ?

Yes, this use of tenses is ok in the right context:

  • He’s [=- he has] been down in the dumps since his girlfriend left him = his girlfriend left him and he has been down in the dumps ever since, and he's still down in the dumps now.
  • He’d [= he had] been down in the dumps since his girlfriend left him = his girlfriend left him, and for a while, he was down in the dumps, but then something else happened and he got himself back onto an even keel (pak se z toho dostal, vzchopil se, sebral se, vzpamatoval se), he got over it, and now he's back to normal, he's no longer down in the dumps.

Here's an example in context. (The man, who has now died, had been down in the dumps after his wife Colleen died, but then he „seemed to be sparking up [= recovering, regaining his "spark“] again.)

Colleen died in November and Kerry [his son] said his father was not the same after. „She was sort of his soulmate … he'd been down in the dumps since November, in and out of hospital. But the last couple of months, he seemed to be sparking up, he'd* really got back into his gardening again,“ Kerry said. (stuff.co.nz)

*nb: he'd [= he had] got back into his gardening again before he died.
